How Hotjar works
Hotjar offers a full set of user experience tools for your website: heat maps, session recordings, and form analytics. In order to install Hotjar on your site you’ll need to manually install its tracking code directly into your site(s). Hotjar also offers custom code for sites hosted by many popular CMS’, including Squarespace, Wix, Joomla, Drupal, and others.
The Hotjar tracking code does 3 things:
It queues any events it should track before the Hotjar script is loaded.
It sets a couple of settings:
hjid: Stands for 'Hotjar ID' - Your site's ID. This is the ID which tells Hotjar which site settings it should load and where it should save the data collected.
hjsv: Stands for 'Hotjar Snippet Version' - The version of the Tracking Code you are using. This is only needed if Hotjar ever updates the Tracking Code and needs to discontinue older ones.
Loads the Hotjar Script.
Get more out of Hotjar with Segment
Installing Hotjar with Segment will load the Hotjar script in the background once you’ve enabled the integration and start tracking right away, with no development needed on your part. Right away your visitors’ sessions will start to be recorded and become available in Hotjar for deeper analysis. Most of Hotjar’s features can be configured in the app based on which pages people visited, where they come from, or what device they’re using.
